The Settle & Carlisle Railway

The railway is famous as being one of the most scenic in
Britain. Travelling through the hills of Cumbria and
Yorkshire, the line follows a rural and picturesque route. Less
well known are the southern connections to this famous line.
The route continues west from Settle to Lancaster and the costal
resort of Morcame. Alternatively you can go east to Leeds,
stopping off at Keighley for the Keighley and Worth Valley
Railway if you wish! The route itself is ideal for walking
and days out at the stations along the route. Many
visitors also just take the chance to view the scenery from the
train.
Along the route, passengers cross Ribblehead Viaduct, with its
24 arches, and the summit of the line - 1169 feet above sea
level. The northern terminus is Carlisle. It is a
wonderful destination with a castle, cathedral and pedestrian
city centre.
