Intercity Rail Travel in the USA and Canada

There are so many great rail journeys in the world that it would be beyond the scope of this site to even try to begin listing them.  I have however provided some information about the USA and Canada.

Intercity Train Travel in the USA

The USA has a good Intercity Rail network provided by Amtrak.  In certain more populated areas intensive high speed corridor services similar to those in Europe provide a relaxing and stress free means of travel for the holiday maker.  Currently the best corridor services are available in the North West, Mid West, North East and California with other states actively working on plans to implement further routes nationwide.  Out with these major urban areas, long distance scenic rail journeys cross the nation.  The USA probably has more great rail journeys than any other nation.  Currently Amtrak offers 16 scenic rail journeys.  Many cross landscapes that would otherwise be beyond the reach of the majority of people and all have lounge or dome cars for ideal viewing.  Find out more about US rail travel in our free guide by clicking here.

What can I expect from my rail journey?

Firstly, its not like flying or taking a coach!  Compared to an airline, Amtrak offers legroom comparable with first class on a plane and the seats recline further for comfortable overnight journeys.  In addition to the greater comfort and space, you are able to get up and walk around, visit the cafe or dining car or chat with friends.  The other big difference is the view.  Large picture windows let you see America from ground level.  Sit back and relax as you watch a constantly changing landscape from your chair.

Long distance scenic routes are generally timed to pass through the best scenery during daylight hours.  They have lounge cars and restaurants and cafes.  For longer journeys of over one night, a sleeping cabin is a worthwhile upgrade.  This is the first class of long distance travel.  Your cozy cabin comes with bedding and refreshments and all meals in the dining car are included.  All trains also have the option of Deluxe Cabins.  In all there is no better way to travel America!

Intercity Train Travel in Canada

Like the USA, Canada has some wonderful rail journeys.  In the East there are frequent high speed services linking the major towns and cities.  While in the interior and West there are great scenic rail journeys.  In fact you can travel all the way from Vancouver on the West Coast to Halifax in the East and as far North as Churchill (ideal for Polar Bear watching!).

Most rail services are provided by VIA Rail Canada and rail passes are available to visitors from overseas.
