If you are fed up of guide books that
assume you will be arriving by car, promote restaurants
the author has never eaten in, and leave out the best
visitor attractions, this book is for you.
Scotland by Rail is a detailed account of how to tour
Scotland by public transport. All the best visitor
attractions, and none of the tourist traps are
extensively covered!
All of
Scotland's (highly!) scenic railway journeys are
described, including the Fort William to Mallaig steam
train, and the West Highland Railway (voted the world's
most scenic two years running). It also has
detailed chapters on Scotland's scenic ferry routes, and
information on complementary bus and coach routes.
The book assumes you will
be touring by train, but if you are on a motoring
holiday it will be equally useful for taking you to the
best places of interest and visitor attractions.
You might even like to use it to seek out a day trip on
a scenic rail or boat trip.
Details: Paper back, 210 pages,
1 map and 17 colour photos. Download a pdf leaflet

From the author: "Hi, I'm Kevin, creator and
writer of Britain by Rail. I had the idea of writing a guide
book to go along with this site in 2006. I realised the most
visitor attractions don't make much of an effort to inform visitors
of how to get there by train. There was a need for a book that
would be aimed at all the people who holiday in Scotland by rail (or
bus for that matter). I also didn't like the fact that the
tourism industry tends to promote those who pay the most.
Often the worst tourist attractions seem to have the biggest
marketing budgets, while the best, who often also offer free
admission (!) seem to get forgotten about. This book tells you
the very best places to holiday or visit. I'm not writing this
to promote the tourism industry! With that in mind I've also
avoided recommending restaurants or hotels. Why should I be
promoting places I've never been?! However in particularly
remote areas I have mentioned if there is somewhere to eat or not!
Otherwise there are links to good places to go to find accommodation
in the area you are visiting. I hope this book is a real
benefit and joy to everyone who uses it. If you have any
suggestions for improvement though please let me know!"
Free downloads to keep your book
up to date
Many guide books let your book go out of date -
its a good encouragement for you to have to buy a new one every
few years! But why throw away a perfectly good book
because a few details have gone out of date? Here you will
find updates to download so you can keep your book up to date
for longer. It's greener, and cheaper (even if I sell less
books!).
