When you turn on your laptop or PDA a pop-up should
appear in the bottom right of your screen. Click on it.
It will show all networks available. For example on GNER it
will say 'gnerwifi' network. Click on it to connect. Now
launch your internet browser. You will then add the address of
the service you wish to pay for and use, again for GNER it is:
www.gnerwifi.train. Check on board you train to see what it
is. Most new laptops and PDAs will detect this automatically
and you will be connected.
If it doesn't connect automatically, you will need to
configure your settings yourself. How to do this:
1. To configure Microsoft Internet Explorer:
a. Open your browser and go to the 'Tools' menu.
b. Select 'Internet Options' and the tab 'Connections'.
c. Under 'LAN Settings' open the window for 'Local Area Network
(LAN) settings'.
d. Ensure the following options are set:
- Select 'Automatically detect settings'
- Deselect 'Use automatic configuration script'
- Deselect 'Use a proxy server for your LAN'.
2.To confirm your SSID settings, follow these steps:
a. Click on 'Start'.
b. Go to 'Settings'.
c. Choose 'Network Connections'.
d. Highlight and right-click on your 'Wireless Network Connection'.
Choose 'Properties' from the menu.
e. Highlight the 'Wireless Networks' tab.
f. Highlight 'gnerwifi' in the available networks window and click
'configure'. Ensure that the data encryption (WEP enabled) option is
disabled, as this is a public service.
g. Click 'Ok' and then click on the 'Advanced' button. Ensure that
'Access point (infrastructure) networks only' is selected. Then
close the window.
3. Obtain an IP address:
a. Click 'Start'.
b. Go to 'Settings'.
c. Choose 'Network Connections'.
d. Highlight and right-click on your 'Wireless Network Connection'.
Choose 'Properties' from the menu.
e. Scroll down and highlight the 'International Protocol TCP/IP'
option and click on 'Properties'.
f. Select 'Obtain an IP automatically' and 'Obtain DNS server
address automatically' and click 'Ok' to confirm.
If prompted, click 'Ok' to confirm.
After you have been through the configuration settings above and
made any changes, you may need to reboot your laptop.
